Hey everybody I have been wondering if all I heard in school and television about being gay in ancient Greece and Rome was true or not. I know it was more popular and accepted but could they get married? How were lesbians treated in these cultures? Since Greece was a collection of city states were some cities better or worse for gay couples? When did this era of acceptance end?
The problem with this question lies is you being extremely vague about what you want to know. The Roman Empire lasted close to 2000 years, and Greece as we know it is even older. You need to specify when, ancient rich, greeks, in Athens, saw homosexuality relatively positively, compared to other cultures at the time. But I don’t know what you want, do you want to know about the other various city states each with their own culture and customs of Ancient Greece, people could write multiple books about each city state’s culture and how it differs from the other city states. Ancient, classical, and medieval romes are all very different from each other, and they have significant cultural differences between them. There is no way I can explain the consensus of how homosexuality was viewed by either the common citizen(because all three spanned multiple cultures) nor the consensus of the upper/ruling classes, as they differed on nearly every topic between each other and the ages.
Frankly, I understand this doesn’t answer your question in the slightest, but it’s because your question is unanswerable.
