What were the constraints on the Spanish Transition to democracy? Were the alternatives feasible?

by Mar-Lana

I'm Spanish and I'm always hearing the transition to democracy was a scam for several reasons. I've never heard or read arguments in favour of the way it was actually done.

Thank you very much in advance!

This is an interesting question, but one that might struggle to get a good answer. Not only is the panel not exactly stacked with experts on modern Spain, as phrased the question is quite broad and vague which makes it hard to answer well. What alternatives are you thinking of? What specific criticisms of the transition/'scam' do you have in mind? I can't promise anything, but it's more likely that I (or someone else) will be able to answer a more directed question about a specific issue.

I did answer a related question a month or so ago about some of the international constraints in the context of Portugal and Spain's transitions to democracy, which might be of interest in the meantime.
