Shields in WW2

by Zealous_Champion

After a new update to CoD: WW2, I have been left wondering if there were any personal shields used in WW2? I can't find anything from google, so i decided to ask here. I know soviet sappers wore armour plates, maybe someone used shields?

Unfortunately not; as had been revealed in the First World War, personal armour had become of increasingly limited use on the modern battlefield, as the striking power of modern armaments meant that to achieve a reasonable degree of protection the armour would be prohibitively heavy. The result of this was that armour was kept, in general to a minimum, with most infantrymen only wearing helmets to protect them from shrapnel, although it should be noted that some Soviet assault infantry also wore a breastplate during assaults on fortifications and the like, which could ostensibly stop some low-power or spent rounds. The Western Allies also developed some body armour of their own, but this proved even more rare due to its inconvenience and weight during mobile operations.

Shields did appear in a different form though - though too heavy for individual infantrymen to wield, artillery, machine-guns and other heavier armaments were sometimes equipped with shields to help provide cover against small-arms fire and shrapnel. In a metaphorical sense, the ultimate evolution of the 'shield' idea came in the development of AFVs and APCs, which would ultimately utilise engine rather than manpower to provide protection to troops.

I hope this has answered your question sufficiently.
