Previous weeks!

Thursday Reading and Research is intended as an academic free-for-all, for the discussion of all issues historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

  • New developments or discoveries in the field

  • Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now

  • Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes

  • Your current research interests or projects

  • The goings on within the academy

  • ...And so on!

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion only of matters historical discussion, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

HowDoIWhat

I'm looking for recommendations for books to read if I want an overview of the history of the LGBT+ movement in the United States but don't have any previous background knowledge in the subject.

I'm currently reading Brett L. Walker's The Conquest of Ainu Lands: Ecology and Culture in Japanese Expansion 1590-1800, and I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone interested in Japan or the Ainu.

What are some good books about the Pan-African movement? I'm completely unfamiliar with this subject, and my own cursory search of this subreddit reveals mostly content about the flag/Ghanian nationalism. Content dealing with both overviews of the movement, and individual countries/figures' experience with it would be appreciated.

DystopianNightmares

For anyone looking into the history of Late Antique and Medieval Christianity, I would recommend the following as basic overviews:

  • Eamon Duffy, Saints and Sinners
  • John Julius Norwich, The Popes
  • Diarmaid MacCulloch, A History of Christianity
  • John McManners, The Oxford Illustrated History of Christianity

There are more specific, or non-thelologically inclined books (to be fair, Norwich is neither of these, but it's a fun read), but there are far too many to name except on request.

I'm looking for as many history books on bronze age as I can find. Both as a whole and particular regions. Mesopotamia, Elam, Egypt, Syria, Xia\Shang China, Hittites, Minoans, Phoenicians... Everything.

So far I've got my hands on "Ancient Iraq" by Georges Roux, "The Oxford History of Ancient Egypt", "A History of the Ancient Near East" by Marc Van de Mieroop, and "A History of Sumer And Akkad" by Leonard William King.

A don't know yet what to look into for the ancient Syria, Hittites, Elam and China. I also don't know whether we have any "historical" data about Phoenicians, at least during the Bronze Age. Same goes to the Minoan and Mycenean civilizations.

Any advice or recommendation would be welcome.
