Why do American soldiers hold their helmets with one hand instead of using the helmet straps?

by McGrex

Watching documentaries about the WWII as well as the war in Korea and Vietnam, I noticed that American soldiers always hold their helmtes while running. See the image of a Vietnam war documentary by Ken Burns on Netflix. Don’t they have straps to fix the helmets? Holding the own helmet with one hand while running, carry guns and trying not be shot does not seem to be a practical thing. What’s the reason for this? Thanks in advance.

In short there was a belief that the shock from an explosion could choke or even decapitate a helmet wearer if the strap was fastened.
