If you're looking for more how-to instruction, you'll want a book like Lauren Rennells's Vintage Hairstyling: Retro Styles with Step-by-Step Techniques and Retro Makeup: Techniques for Applying the Vintage Look. I haven't seen the latter, myself, but I have the former, and while I find there to be a certain modernity to most of the styles - they fit in more with present-day pin-up subculture than being accurate, common 1920s-1960s hairstyles, I mean; if you look at 1940s clothing catalogues or films or pin-ups, the hairstyles are much simpler and less sleek than Rennells's versions - it's a good place to start and might be sufficient to your needs. As far as I know, there is no modern guide on this subject that is really rigorous and an appropriate source for an answer on this subreddit. If you're the person who asked this or a similar question about a month ago, I did purchase a book on this general subject (Hope in a Jar: The Making of American Beauty Culture, by Kathy Peiss), but it's really focused on the culture around cosmetics as a whole and basically ends by World War II.
You may also want to go back to the source and read some books from your period of interest, if you can find copies through used book sellers:
How It's Done ... Hairstyles for You and Creative Hairstyling and Hairshaping, by Ivan of Hollywood (you have probably seen cutting/curling diagrams online from these)
Successful Hair Styling: Structure, Function, Design, by Robert Fiance
Hair Styling: Structure Function, Design, Introducing the Geometric Curl Foundation, from the Beauty Salon Guild
I am also not aware of any full books on makeup written in this period, but there are articles in various 1940s-1950s photography magazines about applying makeup for models, involving contouring and the choice of proper colors. Like the hairstyling books, they aren't available online in full and would need to be found through university libraries. Try to find The Camera, vol. 67 (1945) or American Photography, vol. 44 (1950); The Encyclopedia of Photography: A-Z (1949) also has an article on makeup for models.
