In the world cup of 1966, the Union Jack can be seen waved everywhere among England’s fans. Nowadays, it’s the white flag with the St. George’s Cross that the fans are waving. When and why did this switch occur?
Great Britain, the country which comprises England, Scotland, and Wales, uses the Union Jack as its official flag. For FIFA football matches, however, Great Britain does not compete. Rather, England, Scotland, and Wales all have national teams using their respective flags and have since they started playing in FIFA. England’s flag is the St. George’s Cross, which is used to designate England in FIFA matches.
