Short Answers to Simple Questions | July 04, 2018

by AutoModerator

Previous weeks!

Please Be Aware: We expect everyone to read the rules and guidelines of this thread. Mods will remove questions which we deem to be too involved for the theme in place here. We will remove answers which don't include a source. These removals will be without notice. Please follow the rules.

Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.

Here are the ground rules:

  • Top Level Posts should be questions in their own right.

  • Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.

  • Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.

  • We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.

  • Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.

  • Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).

  • The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.

Is there a known reason why the city of Azincourt in France is name Agincourt in english?

I've always wondered about this peculiar difference in the way it's called in english. I know that sometimes, names of cities change from one language to another (London->Londres for example) but in the case of Azincourt, the single letter difference (and in the middle of the name) has always striked me as odd. It was already known as Aisincurt back in 1165, so the z-like name was already there way before the battle, when the town became famous on both sides. Could it be because of a typo by someone in england? The 'z' and the 'g' are a bit similar in cursive letters, so maybe someone read Agincourt instead of Azincourt and it stayed that way on the english side... that's the only explanation I can find myself, but I'd love to know the real reason if there's any

One of my favourite books from undergrad was Benedict Anderson's "Imagined Communities". I find the study of nationalism extremely fascinating and have been wanting to read more on the topic ever since. Can anyone recommend other books/papers on nationalism with a similar approach? Or perhaps work that reflects where Anderson's has developed today?

I'm studying minorities - specifically refugees - next year for the whole year of my final undergraduate course. I would like to improve my knowledge of post-colonial, minority seminal texts to prepare for the year. I have read Lears' Gramsci article as well as Orientalism, and 'Can the subaltern speak?' but have just purchased The Making of the English Working Class. Is there any others I should be reading before the start of next term?

Short question: Is there a distinction in historiography between a.) people who study a certain period/place in history and b.) someone who studies a certain subject over a long period of time more generally? And if so, what are those two "kinds to do research" called. For example, mercenaries. Not tied to any one particular period, just looking at how mercenary companies developed over the course of history. (As opposed to someone who studies for example the HRE from 1400-1500)

I'm not sure where to ask this, so I'm going to ask this here, How do I search for the original source from references on Wikipedia? There's this bit from a prelude on Operation Barbarossa, Service 2005, p. 60, it's too little information for me to find anything on Google Scholar citations without having a deluge of hundreds of posts.

I can't find much information on how to search for Wikipedia specific sources.

Ancient warfare. Let's say I'm a light cavalry skirmisher, armed with a few javelins. I understand that the Romans and many of their neighbors employed units that roughly fit this description. My question is, where the heck do I keep my spare javelins? Do I have them strapped to the side of my horse, or something? Do i just take one and then switch to the backup sword?

Is Sakamoto Ryoma's hair grey in this picture? It's from 1867, the year he was assassinated, so I know he is 30-31. Seems unlikely that it would be grey since he was so young, and in other pictures his hair is black. Is it a trick of the light? Could it be dyed blonde? Or is his hair really grey?

I am currently in the process of preparing for my master thesis and am looking for good scientific literature of the invasion of the Normandy and in general the invasion of Europe during the Second World War (D-Day and forward). Which books do you recommend for an overview?

I am thinking about following one unit through the War from D-Day to the End of the war (with some context before that of course). Similar to the famous "Band of Brothers". Any ideas which unit to pick or where to start?

Thank you very much fellow historians, and have a great day!
