Is it possible to trace when/where/with whom an ancestor served with in the Military?

by Chris-em-all

I'm doing some semi light research on my family tree (left behind from a Great Grandfather that died some years ago) and I have a few relatives that I know served during the Great War (other family members have told me). However, these relatives never spoke of their experiences and are all now dead. Is it possible to find where/when or with whom they served? I'll be grateful for any help! If it's any help, I live and we're from the UK :)

Hello there! As your question is related to looking for identification/information regarding military personnel, our Guide on Military Identification may be of use to you. It provides a number of different resources, including how to request service records from a number of national agencies around the world, as well as graphical aids to assist in deciphering rank, unit, and other forms of badges or insignia. While the users here may still be able to lend you more assistance, hopefully this will provide a good place to start!
