During the 1994 Mexican presidential election, the PRI's initial candidate, Luis Donaldo Colosio, was shot dead at a rally in Tijuana after his discourse had become increasingly focused on social justice. How and why was he nominated in the first place if he was so different from his party-mates?

Truth is he actually wasn’t different, the social justice advocate narrative is one that his own party (PRI) pushed to help his successor as a candidate by attracting people with it, Colosio was a die hard PRIista, his campaign was lazy and not what it was expected and Diego Fernandez was going to win the election.

Colosio was killed by internal dissent in his own party, Manuel Camacho Solis (who ended up being a collaborator of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador who is now president elect and a vocal critic of Carlos Salinas de Gortari) felt he was neglected by CSG who ended up choosing Colosio because he was a yes man for him so that broke up some factions of the party, and if anything I believe he ended up plotting Colosio’s murder.
