Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal Act is seen as an awful occurrence, however I recall reading something along the lines of how the Act saved the Indians from something worse that would have happened if they stayed. Is there truth behind this? If so what’s the story?

Sorry if my title doesn’t make any sense. But basically IIRC the Indian Removal Act was Jackson’s idea to help “save” the Native Americans from an even worse fate had they stayed. I think it was some opposition to Jackson or some other elected official that was planning on a massacre or something of the sort.

Would Native American culture have been completely wiped out if it hadn’t been for the Indian re-education schools of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s?
