What’s the difference between a Religion and a sect? Wasn’t Christianity a sect too?

A sect is generally a subset of a larger group or religion. Christianity was a subset of Judaism for decades if not centuries after it developed (as we're the zealots, and others) It took a long time for them to consider themselves distinct and possibly longer for outsiders to view them as distinct from each other (not certain of the second part.)
