I've noticed that many paintings and illuminated manuscripts I've seen especially from about 1200-1600 will depict historical scenarios, biblical tales, ancient battles or stories of Roman saints. But many will depict them wearing clothing or armor contemporary to the year they were painted. Why was this? Was it an intentional stylistic choice at the time to "reboot" the stories into a contemporary setting? Or did they simply not have any concept of how styles and weapons/armor had changed over the centuries?
I asked a similar question many moons ago about the Crusader Bible and received an excellent answer from u/wagrid
