So just to provide a little preface, around 6-8 months ago I found myself really taking a deep dive into the intellectual history of the progressive era, with a particular focus on eugenics.
Anywho, I just finished reading /u/snapshot52's excellent "Method Monday: On the Study of Assimilation" and much to my own chagrin realized that I've never really considered the impact the eugenics movement would play in the forced americanization of native americans. Could anybody provide a brief overview of the role eugenics would play in this process? Additionally, understanding that this is probably a huge area of study, any follow-up reading pertaining to this topic would be greatly appreciated!
I'm also curious about Henry Richard Pratt, the wikipedia article paints a suspiciously kind picture of the man everything considered and rather lacking in sources. How is he typically viewed by historians studying this particular period in history?
Hey there! Sorry for the lateness of this. I saw your post and saved it, but then became super busy.
I've actually written an answer before regarding the U.S. eugenics movements and the impact it had on American Indians. You can see that here. Thanks also for liking my Monday Methods post on assimilation!
