There is an interesting recording of USS Sealion's attack on the Japanese fast battleship Kongo and an oiler. The garbled noise illustrates why there is not a lot of original combat audio. Even in an enclosed space like a submarine, it is hard to record sound in an audible fashion. The sound recording devices of this era were often quite bulky and thus also rare to be on a WWII battlefield, unlike cameras which proliferated among all combatants.
