How did the square cross, such as the one that is used today by the Red Cross, come to represent medecine?

In the beginning, it didn't represent medicine in general. It was used as an easily identifiable symbol, that is not identified with any single country. The idea behind it was to improve the care given to wartime victims. Since Switzerland has had a neutral status for a while, the symbol was created by inverting the colours on the Swiss flag.
