Red Army tactics at eastern front during WWII ¿Did they just send soldiers to be massacred?

by coletowski

Films like "enemy at the Gates" and "My way" have depicted the dreadful scenario of eastern front as the Red Army deployed poorly-equipped units and forced them to front charge against solid german positions, which always ends up in an unnecessary waste of men. https://youtu.be/oJ3bzg-Tvt4.

Most people would agree that soviet officers relied on the constant availability of fresh reinforcements ready to fight, so they could replace the numerous kills elicited by assaulting enemy's lines. But Is it true that officers would send off their troops to a pointless death with low ammo, few chances of break through enemy positions and a death sentence if they fall back? What other tactics did officers employ in order todo assault enemy lines?
