We refer to early modern European leaders by many titles, but for the large part, most Native American leaders are referred to as "chief". What were some of the varied political systems of the North American Indians?

In early modern Europe, we see Republics in Italy and the Netherlands, constitutional monarchies in England and Poland, and absolute monarchies in France and Spain. I have a hard time believing that all Native American polities were organized on the lines of some form of stereotypical tribal council that we associate with "chief"

There have been a few other questions and answers that might be useful to you!

u/Opechan gives an answer discussing how leaders of Native American groups used to be called kings and emperors, but that "as the settler-colonist position became more established and Native populations became more marginalized and less useful to Western goals, Western approximations of indigenous titles were also downgraded to "Head Man," "Chief," and the like." There's quite a bit more in the comments as well.

The discussion here and here gives more detail on how historians decide how to translate titles from one language to another.
