How did rich nobility and royalty keep their wealth secured before the use of paper money?

I don't have a specific historical time frame that I'm interested in but I'm just curious, did Kings keep a giant room filled with gold coins? Was it locked by key and how is access and inventory controlled? I also mean in time frames predating banking systems
