Some general questions about World War 1 specific to a relative who I recently found out died there.

This weekend as part of my family holidays we went to Ypres in Belgium where we were able to find my Grandfather's Uncle on the Menin Gate (see Photo Here). His name was John 'Jack' Gibson. His body was never found and they don't know the exact date of his death though he was reported missing on the 19th September 1917. He was a member of the 4th Battalion London Regiment Royal Fusiliers. Here is a photo that my family own of him. He's the one in the middle with the cross above (A good looking fella I'd say!).

So really I wondered if the experts as r/AskHistorians would be able to provide me with any insight as to what sort of fighting he likely faced, the battles he would have seen and in particular the battles around the 19th September 1917 when he would most likely have died. Perhaps there is anything famous or significant about the Battalion that he was in? Or perhaps it is even possible to find personal things about J. Gibson! I have no idea what's really possible to find but I'd love to learn some more about him.

Always been a big fan of this subreddit but I've never posted anything before so I hope I didn't break any rules. If you have follow up questions I can ask my Grandparents who possibly have further information.

That's a link to the "War history of the 4th battalion, the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers)". You can read the entire book for free on that website. On pages 310-315, it details the actions that the Battalion took during the battle of Passchendaele around September 19th 1917. I only skimmed it so I can't give an overview of what happened but I hope this helps.

Hello there! As your question is related to looking for identification/information regarding military personnel, our Guide on Military Identification may be of use to you. It provides a number of different resources, including how to request service records from a number of national agencies around the world, as well as graphical aids to assist in deciphering rank, unit, and other forms of badges or insignia. While the users here may still be able to lend you more assistance, hopefully this will provide a good place to start!

Hi -- also, upon further discussion among the mod-team, would you mind terribly to either remove the link to the memorial flier/page, or black out the address? We don't usually allow that kind of personally identifying information. Unfortunately, people can be malicious with that sort of thing. Thanks!
