The Existence of Libertalia

by f0rever-n1h1l1st

While it’s genuinely accepted that Libertalia didn’t exist in the way it’s portrayed in legend, there are historical accounts of members of Thomas Tew’s crew settling on the Northern peak of Madagascar where they divided up the locals and built “fortresses” in the forest.

Is it possible there are still remnants or ruins of those “fortresses” deep in the forest of Northern Madagascar???

I’m curious because it’s mentioned in Johnston’s A General History Vol.1 (generally considered the more reliable of the two volumes) and by Woodes Rogers in his journals as he bought slaves from the remnants of a pirate colony there during his time as captain of the Delicia.

I've written a long series of posts about this here you would probably be interested in.

I'd also like to point out that the account of Thomas Tew is in fact contained in Charles Johnson's second and greatly expanded edition of 1726 (not the first) and which is considered to be the least reliable. Some of the information about Tew in this account is true, and Tew did visit Madagascar but there is no evidence of Johnson's account of him setting up any sort of kingdom there, although some other pirates did attempt this, the most successful of whom was John Plantain during the 1720s.
