Did the Romans use Egyptian priests to administer Egypt, and did this continue after Christianization?

It seems like the Egyptian priesthood is almost timeless throughout foreign conquerors, and I heard Romans at least in 1st century treated Egypt as a special province which normal Romans were restricted from going. And what comes after Romans is the Islamic conquest, and during the Romans, Christianization, so it seems like 30BCE-650CE was a time of really interesting change for Egypt, and I wonder how much continuity there was near the top.
