Looking for advice

I am approaching my senior year of high school. I am passionate about history and it has always been the only subject that never gets old to me and never will. I deeply enjoy learning about it. I would absolutely love to major in history but I was wondering what the career path options are after graduating. Are there ever many internship-like opportunities available for history majors still in college, and if so, what are some examples?

No undergraduate degree will prepare you for life after college, especially as regards a lucrative career, though in the case of history this is more true than most other degrees. You are going to have to carve a path for yourself. Dig out fields that are uniquely interesting to you and don’t have a plethora of pre-existing research surrounding them. Keep all of your professors close and really listen to them and try to understand the ins and outs of their research and paths to professorship. You won’t find many internships but you will find professors who will support you on independent research that WILL land you placement at better graduate universities. But, bottom-line, history is the most methodologically rigorous of the humanities and a graduate degree in history will mean a lot to many employers in different fields, even if you don’t decide to do research.

For now though, focus on what you like. Take a variety of history classes on eras or regions you wouldn’t expect to be interested in. History, as a field, branches in so many directions that you will find yourself faced with opportunities if you dive deep and commit yourself to it.

Last, most important point: LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE TO FLUENCY. This will set you apart, especially if you prove yourself to be a competent researcher.
