The moderation team of this subreddit does a tremendous job, their enforcement of the rules is the key reason why this sub is of such high quality. I wanted to show my appreciation for their work and was wondering what would be the best way to show support with my wallet.
At first I thought about buying reddit gold for moderators, but oftentimes I see redditors who receive gold edit their comment to say that they would rather have the money go towards something else like a charity or foundation.
This is why I'm creating this thread, I want to know if the moderation team has any preference as to how to show our gratitude. For example, I thought users who want to thank the team could make a donation in the name of /r/AskHistorians to a related foundation, museum or charity, and would like to know if the mods have any preferences towards any organisation.
Comment with your thoughts and ideas.
Not a mod and definitely don't want to pre-empt any suggestions they have, but an additional option could be to support the AskHistorians Podcast's Patreon. And if you haven't checked the podcast out you definitely should!
Can I say that I absolutely LOVE the book list /r/history and /r/askhistorians has? THANK YOU guys for putting it together, even if it is community based.
It is FILLED with quality books with an enormous range of sub-subjects. Heck, you guys even have science based books and OTHER educational/learning tools and places to go on the internet. That way any amateur interested in history (like me) can learn a surpising amount without having to google things for hours and hours trying to piece stuff together who lived alongside who.
I really wish /r/science took the book list as seriously as you guys did. They have some good book suggestions, no doubt, but not like this sub.
This sub and the rest of the reddit history channel are fantastic places to learn, which reddit needs more of. And more than that the mods here make sure the evidence or facts are well...facts. True, accurate facts with the citations to back it up most of the time. It is wonderful. So thank you guys and girls for putting it together and running good, quality learning “channels”.
You guys could look into throwing some kind of charity banquet type thing? A local meetup of reddit historians where you could all just talk and enjoy the thing you all seem to love so much. Have people donate to preserving heritage sites, furthering history research or to the mod team themselves. Mods could also take donations online (so no one pockets the money) and have people bring food like a pot luck? It would obviously take a lot of planning but it could be nice.
The mods here are indeed incredible. So quick, so thorough, so firm. It's fantastic to see mods really invested in the community and the standards of the sub, and not afraid to wield the banhammer. My sincerest Thanks to you all.
In addition to charity or outside orgs (and not to hijack the initial intent of OP, but because it's related to the 'giving' aspect): Contributions other than gold have also been floated on specific instances to, for example, send members of the mod team to major conferences where AH flairs and mods have been asked to run a panel or roundtable at, say, the American Historical Association meeting, or the big Public History confab a few years back.
Those trips are usually not (if ever) paid for, at least not in entirety--so it's up to the delegates to shoulder what may be an $800 to $1000 expense per person. If an old hand among the mods/flairs with knowledge could clarify as to how often that happens and whether any thought's been given to a 'standing fund' (and its oversight) for such things, it might help here. I chipped in $50 (I think) to the AHA fund drive, even though I could not attend what by most accounts was a remarkable panel, and I would do it again for public-outreach goals.
Hear hear! We are fortunate to have such an incredible forum and the mods deserve our appreciation.
I'd love to see the mods do an annual Awards ceremony, for best history books of the year. Best scholarly book, best popular history, best prose Style, best undiscovered story, etc.
