A good book to read that takes me to the start of humanity's evolution?

I'd like to go through humanity's history in chronological order. From the first atom to our current day president. I have 2 years left at my university library and can and am willing to read complicated books on the matter. The problem is, is that I don't know what book would be the best place for the beginning for human evolution.

Hi, for human evolution - which happened way back in prehistory - please x-post this question to our sister sub /r/AskAnthropology. While there are some anthropologists here, this sub focuses on the historical past of homo sapiens sapiens.

What you're looking for does exist, and it's called Big History. This is a very new (and very small) field which seeks to situate human history on a cosmic scale, beginning with the formation of the universe and ending with modern times and even predictions of the future. It's very interesting as a thought experiment, and it's meant to be, in the words of David Christian, "a modern-day creation myth" that merges history with scientific fields to create a grand narrative for humanity. However you should be aware that history looks very different from this greatly zoomed-out perspective. Big History (and large-scale history in general) is not, as commonly assumed, a watered-down and condensed version of all smaller histories combined. No such thing really exists - History relies on perspective and thus differs depending on the scale one chooses. Big History also works more with theoretical models than with dates, facts, etc. Nevertheless I do recommend it - read David Christian's Maps of Time: An Introduction to Big History (Berkeley: University of California Press, 2004; 2011).
