Dear community,
Lately I've been fascinated with Jean Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683) a French politician who worked for King Louis XIV.
The problem is that the amount of information available on him is limited (especially online). Are there any sources that you would recommend?
A good recent book I would recommend is Jacob Soll's "The Information Master: Jean-Baptiste Colbert's Secret State Intelligence System."
Soll is interested in the role that Colbert played in creating what we might recognize as a modern bureaucratic network to direct state operations in early modern France. His sometimes revolutionary ideas regarding reports and standardized formats for information made him pretty unique-- and uniquely suited to his positions-- and therefore a very tough act for anyone to follow up, especially as his ideas were so novel. However, as an academic book, it is sadly not "cheap", though it is much more affordable than typical monographs.
If you read French then I would encourage you to check out Gallica Online the Bibliotheque Nationale's digital archives. You can find numerous works on Colbert throughout the centuries as well as collections of his correspondence that have been typed and printed.
