What I am curious about is how the first troops landed in Japan? How did they go about arresting any elements of the military? How did the people who were on duty at that time respond, did they just lay down their arms, go home, and enjoy some tea waiting for the invaders to come over? How did the Japanese government function?
It's been some years since I read it, and I only have notes on the passages relating to Europe, but I seem to remember that Ian Buruma's book "Year Zero: A History of 1945" has some excellent material on this. Very readable to boot, too.
