What happened to all the empty buildings in Rome during the middle ages

Rome has a population of ~1 million during the Roman Empire but only 10-20k during the Middle Ages.

Were all the old buildings razed or left abandoned? Are there any 1st hand accounts of living in a depopulated city?

The city of Rome had a population of over one million people at its apex, but by the year 1000 CE it had fallen to less than 20,000. Are there any surviving accounts of persons living in Rome from that period and what they thought of the massive ruins around them?
