What happened to Stonehenge during the wars?

by Chubby-Fish

I asked in r/history but they deleted it so I left those jabronis and came here. I saw some bones that were 5,000 years old were found at the site recently and it only just occured to me that it was there whilst there wars were going on.

I googled it but not much came up, nothing that I could see anyway. There was a forum where someone said that Stonehenge was allegedly moved during the wars to protect it, did this happen? Did Stonehenge see any action? Why doesn't it look like the side of an Afghanistan building in the Call of Duty games if it did see action?

Thank u, love u x

Stonehenge is in a fairly sparsely populated area of southern England. The monument is a series of large shaped standing stones, weighing many tons. The land around is mainly used for livestock, primarily sheep farming, and some arable crops. As such it had no strategic importance that would justify it either being attacked or being defended during the wars.

There was no ground fighting in England during the war, so there was no risk of the monument being damaged. Other than a sustained artillery barrage it isn’t clear whether the stones could actually be damaged.

Stonehenge sits on Salisbury Plain which has been a major training area for the British army for at least a century, so damage from tank manoeuvres to earthworks and barrows in the wider landscape is not impossible.

The idea that Stonehenge was moved is so fanciful that I would be very intrigued to see the source of the claim.
