In the book The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, a system of election fraud is described (ch 9). How true are these events and do we have any historical evidence of this kind of election fraud in the US?

What was described in the book was a little frightening as I don't see why it couldn't still be happening 100+ years later. But this book is fiction, so I wonder how accurate it is? On the other hand it seems like this sort of thing would be hidden from history, as it would be done in secret as much as possible.

Were there any reliable accounts of systems of election fraud in US history?

If indeed the fraud was successful it would imply that the fraudsters gained powers. I would like to see the proof as well but hesitate in holding out hope as it appears certain to me that the successful fraudsters would unflinchingly and without hesitation or delay proceed to destroy any evidence, thwart any inquiry or stall any record keeping of, even, the suspicion of electoral fraud. Once they're in the corridors of power...
