How did people send nudes to each other before pictures could be sent via SMS?

Ladies and gentleman; short, single sentence answers will be removed, as will jokes, and all other manner of uselessnesses.

Please think to yourself, before you answer; "am I a historical expert in my nana sending my gramps nudes?" Because that seems like a question best left to the academics in the audience.

Our rules can be found in a big rectangle on the sidebar. While we wait for an answer, maybe that body of work could form some light reading for those who haven't had a look? A word of warning; this thread will be modded heavily, with limited tolerance for those acting out.

Unless you were a semi-professional photographer with your own studio doing artsy black-and-white shots, or you were willing to settle for small Polaroids, you simply could not take nudes.

Even into the late 1980s, most commercial picture development places would simply refuse to develop them. You would get the roll back, minus those photographs with a polite note saying, “This roll of film contains inappropriate images. Please do not resubmit them for developing.”
