Why have several quack medical treatments, such as reiki or homeopathy, become relatively widespread despite the apparent rise of modern, evidence-based medicine?

In addition, has there been a marked difference in reception to 'Western' types (homeopathy, chiropractic etc.) v.s. 'Eastern' ones (reiki, TCM), such as in terms of popularity or clientele?

Hi there - a warning: this is /r/AskHistorians, and we are looking for in-depth and comprehensive answers which historically trace the way that such medical treatments have been used - there is a long history of quack treatments, of course. Discussions of the psychology of people who use such treatments are beyond our scope except where this is discussed in relation to actual history, as are discussions of the role of social media in promoting such treatments (because your aunt's Instagram posts about homeopathy are definitely beyond our '20 year rule').
