Perception is everything... No running water... No electricity... No (modern) firearms... Living in a castle... Writing manuscripts with a quill and ink... Medieval choruses and instruments....
I just can't comprehend it, what wouldn't been completely normal to a Medieval person....and it is an obsession of mine.
I've been working on this off and on for 50 years. There is no one book because there is no one person.
Medieval man or medieval woman? Different lives, though not as different as the most common pop stuff may claim, or not in that way, or not if you want to kick over the traces.
Noble or criminal? Farmer or burgher? Huntsman or monk? Merchant or physician? Rich or poor?
On top of that, medieval European covers at least a thousand years of social and technological change, from the Arctic to the Sahara, and the Urals to the Atlantic. That's a lot of different cultures! Each of those has some of those subcultures I hit you with above.
So it's complicated.
If you live in a castle, you may have running water.
