I have a friend whose father was a surgeon in WW2. Like many veterans they did not discuss their experience with friends/family, but I was hoping someone might know of a book/text/biography that shares the experience.
Thank you.
If you are talking about the US Army the only book that comes to mind is Fighting for Life: American Military Medicine in World War II by Albert E. Cowdrey.
I've yet to read it myself, but it's been reviewed well in the few academic publications where it's cropped up. It's also available in preview form online, allowing you to look for yourself before deciding whether it's what you're looking for.
The one that comes to mind is Surgeon at Arms: Parachuting into Arnhem with the First Airbornes by Lipmann Kessel. It focuses less on the medical side and more on his capture and escape from German captivity, and hiding out in occupied Holland.
