How did the East German educational system teach about Nazi atrocities?

by mymainismythrowaway1

I've read much about how the German educational system puts a huge emphasis on teaching about the rise of the Nazi party and the Halocaust. I'm assuming that this is true for West Germany before 1990, but I am curious about how this topic was treated in East Germany. In general, how was the second world war treated by the media and educational system in the GDR?

More can be written, but you might like to start with "How was the Holocaust taught and understood in East Germany vs West Germany?" by /u/kieslowskifan -- specifically, Part I, which was about East Germany. (Part II was about West Germany.) I think another good one, with some different details, was "How did East and West Germany differ in how they dealt with the legacy of Nazism [...]" by /u/wiled.

This is not to discourage discussion. More questions, data and debate are welcome.
