At what point did people living in the Italian peninsula stop identitying as Roman?

While there won't be a specific year, I'm curious as to how long after the sack of Rome that people living in the city of Rome--or say modern day Milan or Naples--started viewing themselves as something "other" than Romans.

Unfortunately, there isn't really a definitive time where you can look and say, these people saw themselves as romans and now not romans, but I think these threads will help you
