I've inherited a large collection of photos from my Great Grandfather R G Read (on the right in this photo). This photo was taken during his army sevice in Egypt between 1921-30, I'm intrigued to find out more about this photo if at all possible? Where was this taken, why are the skulls there ?

Where was this taken— I don’t think there’s enough information to say.
Why are the skulls there— likewise, I don’t think there’s enough information to say. Egypt has no lack of tombs and bones. St. Catherine’s monastery in Sinai has an ossuary, as I assume must other monasteries throughout the country. Or it might have just been set up as a local curio for tourists. Or maybe your great grandfather and his friend stacked them.
There’s no “significance” to the photo that I can see that would help to identify it further, unfortunately.
I can tell you that 1921-30 was an awfully interesting time to be in Egypt, given the Unilateral Declaration of Independence in 1922 and the assassination of Lee Stack in 1924.
