Do we have any evidence that the ancient Indian epics (Ramayana, Mahabharata, etc) could be based in reality?

For example, the Trojan War was thought to be purely a myth until the actual discovery of Troy. Now most scholars agree there is some truth to it, at least.

Do we have anything to support the idea that the ancient Indian legends could be based in a core of truth?

I feel like I need to address your OP first (though I might be interpreting what your saying incorrectly)

The city is now known to exist, scholar still don't think that the actual trojan war as told by Homer actually happened

Follow-up: We see a number of unusual military formations and tactics in these Indian epics, such as huge labyrinthine chakravyuha. Were these embellishments of a later era or was there genuinely a style of warfare that made them viable?
