What are the reasons slavery of African people did not make its way up to Canada?
It did. There were about 400 slaves in Upper Canada, and a much larger number in Nova Scotia/New Brunswick. The percentages were about equal to other parts of New England, and many of the same factors apply — Canadian industries weren’t super applicable to large-scale slavery, so mostly someone who owned slaves would only own one or two.
In Quebec, there was a long-standing system of enslaving Native Americans that started before African slavery was really entrenched in North America. It didn’t offer any benefits to compete with an already established system, so it didn’t displace Native slavery, although some people in Quebec later came to own African slaves.

I’m the “lone Canadian student” mentioned in this review and later did some independent research on Upper Canada, which is where I arrived at the figure of 400 slaves. I presented at a conference but haven’t gotten around to publishing yet. https://earlycanadianhistory.ca/2017/09/25/north-to-bondage-loyalist-slavery-in-the-maritimes-a-review/
