I know we have a read this book in the side bar but there are so many good history books. I’d like to have someone say...hey read this book because it is accurate and awesome. I’ve lost so many good books in the flood of Baton Rouge that I need to replenish my library.
So a ways back we tried to have a book club thing attempted. It didn't get much participation and as such, folded. As others have said though, we have an extensive booklist you ought to check out, and the thursday thread is always a good place to find more recommendations.
We have a weekly Reading and Recommendation Thread, in addition to the books and resources list.
Feel free by the way to ask for recommendations on a particular topic that you think isn't covered or isn't sufficiently covered by the booklist.
It's possible that there's some great monograph that someone knows that doesn't make the "canon" of the booklist.
[edit: both sources mentioned by /u/AncientHistory 4 minutes before me.]
I can't speak for anyone else, not being a moderator or anything, but I'm a bit unclear on what you're asking for. By "we have a read this book in the side bar", are you referring to "Thursday Reading and Research" (what AncientHistory glossed as "Reading and Recommendation Thread")? What problems do you see? I just looked at the latest Thursday: there were three books, and each person gave a mini-review.
