Was the Confederacy supposed to be a democracy?

by enlightendark

I know that formally the Confederacy was a democracy, but I mean, the very idea driving their struggle towards independence was the right to own slaves. So I guess they weren't the most open-minded guys, and I wonder if the "founding fathers" or the ruling elites planned to turn the Confederacy into a mock democracy or an autocratic regime - limiting or suppressing civil rights - had they won independence.

I wonder whether the replies here might be a useful start, in explaining the concept of "liberty" as seen in the South? "Was the average Confederate soldier a strong proponent of white supremacy?", with primary answers by /u/Georgy_K_Zhukov, but also smaller contributions by others.

But more can be written on the topic. Does that discussion help?

So this is not to discourage discussion. More questions, data and debate are welcome.
