When did democrats become the liberal party?

by scubajulle

I am not american and haven't really been interested in american history except the civil war and war of independence. But I heard that the democrats supported slavery in the past and lincoln was a republican. How and when did democrats become the liberal party instead of republicans who are now heavily conservative and repressive?

The sub has a FAQ section on the flip between the democrats and the republicans

Not sure if I should post separately, but in addition to OP’s question: When did the US start using “liberal” to categorise the economic left, as opposed to how everyone else uses it - the laissez faire right?
