Yes they were very good troops. They had to meet experience, size and IIRC (I'm away from my books atm) age before they could be considered for the Guard. They were often used as shock troops- the regular line infantry would soften up the enemy then the Old Guard would hit them and hopefully break them. They were usually used in the middle and end of battles.
