In the medieval period, how many buildings would be in a single town, in a city? How many people? I've heard medieval cities quoted at around a half a square mile, nothing like today's cities. I've seen quotes for the populations of Paris and London at their peak, but what about the average town and city? The one that isn't a capital, or surrounded by perfect farmland, just the regional center of power?
Edit: I knew I forgot something. I'm asking for medieval europe. If it needs to be more specific, let's say France.
As for a specific time. How about around 1000ad.
This is a pretty expansive subject and i think that it is almost impossible to answer. i Think you should rephrase the question and limit it to a "when" and "where" as the medieval period is a fairly large chunk of time (as well as being ill defined) and as cities weren't built in the same way in every region nor every country.
