How Did the Soviet Union Determine How to Absorb Certain Countries And Not Others?

by yourmomsbaux

Hey guys,

My girlfriend is a Lithuanian and we were discussing the post World War II order and the Soviet Occupation of her country. Our question is this:

How did the USSR decide which countries to absorb as actual Socialist Republics? Specifically, why didn't Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and/or Yugoslavia get subsumed into the larger Soviet Union?

A question like this was asked about a year ago and /u/Minardi-Man gave an excellent answer to it. Here is a link to the thread - https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/5zqo0y/why_did_the_ussr_not_incorporate_poland/
