The Handy Religion Answer Books by John Renard might be up your proverbial alley. It has chapters on the major world religions (which is to say, religions with a large and mobile membership, not traditional/Indigenous religions, and I may or may not have had Words With The Author about this). The book is structured as a massive Q&A session. Each chapter hits up current devotional practices, core beliefs, and--of course--history of the religion.

A little bit more advanced, there is Before Religion: A History of a Modern Concept by Brent Nongri, which considers that what we know as "religion" today is defined very very narrowly basically by a modern view of Christianity, and traces the meanings of different belief systems called religion/mythology today back to what they actually involve, without the baggage of comparison.

Since it's usually a poorly represented religion within bigger collections, I'd like to suggest Zoroastrians: Their Beliefs and Practices by Boyce. It's an easy 220-page read. It's a particularly useful religion to read up on because it is possibly the oldest organized religion, that defined an exclusive community united by a creed, with a central doctrine and holy texts (well, hymns).

The text is getting dated and it does have some issues (for example, the late Boyce seems to have been very committed to the idea that Zoroaster's "original teaching" must have had a logical consistency lacking in later variant sects, which colours some of her inferences) but it's still the best summarizing and introductory text out there in my opinion.

I would suggest A history of religious ideas by Mircea Eliade. It has 3 volumes. There are actually a lot of books wrote by Mircea Eliade which are touching subjects about religion or something like that, they're also translated in English, cna be found so easy on ebay if you search Mirea Eliade
