Is Columbus an exaggerated evil?

by _DeanRiding

I just watched a video trying to minimise some of his effects on the native Americans, with the main point seemingly being that he was just as bad to the Spanish people he ruled over. Is this true? What's the historical consensus on Columbus these days? The most damning evidence I saw against him was that he would chop off the hands of any natives who couldn't produce him a bag of gold.

Mentions Columbus' treatment of europeans

Sidenote: not sure how him also treating fellow spaniards cruelly paints him in a good light, if anything, it kinda shows that he's an asshole who's criticism can't be blown off by saying "everybody was like that
