This would help me a lot in my exposition on the topic coming up in a few weeks time.
I’ve studied the topic of Suffragettes and I’m making a comparison on whether or not the film is an accurate depiction of what actually happened.
Any insight?
It might help, for those who have not seen the film, if you could possibly list the main incidents/claims it makes. Then any suffrage experts who have not seen the film as yet would potentially still be able to help you.
Although I've not seen the film myself, I can suggest that the following areas are likely to be the most historically contentious, and it would be interesting to know what Suffragettes says about them:
• Treatment of the positions, relative importance and relations between the WSPU (suffragettes) and NUWSS (suffragists)
• Handling of the suffragettes' direct action campaign, particularly the "terrorist" aspects of bomb-making and arson
• Handling of the responses made by the authorities to the suffragettes, especially depictions of police violence, force feeding, the effects of the Cat and Mouse Act on female prisoners, and so on
• Depiction of Emily Davison
• Portrayal of male attitudes to the suffrage campaign, especially among politicians
• Space given to the role of men in assisting the suffrage campaign
• The extent to which the Pankhursts are portrayed as sole leaders of the suffrage campaign
• If the film takes things up to the granting of the vote to women, its position on what factors caused this to occur, and the weight given to the suffragettes' role in forcing a change
Finally I should add that as the initial question comes a bit close to being a "homework question", which is not allowed under the rules here, you may find responses are more focused on directing you to resources (permitted) than actually offering detailed analysis (which by the sound of it might well be in breach of the rules).
