can anybody recommend a serious book about what it was like for regular German citizens during the rise of the Nazis, 1935-1939, before it was clear a major war ha started? especially interested in economical statistics and such.

The Third Reich Trilogy by Richard J Evans is a great overall look through the rise, rule, and fall of the Nazi regime. The first and second books in the series, The Coming of the Third Reich and The Third Reich in Power both go into great detail about the period you’re by looking at. Evans does a good job of mixing firsthand accounts and looking at the statistical evidence available, so they should cover what you’re looking for.
