Changing Horses

by Snagsby

In old books and such - I'm thinking 18th and 19th century here - people would sometimes switch or change horses in the middle of a journey. How the heck would this work? Horses are not fungible.

**Edit in response to one comment. I'm referring to the situation where one rider has a long distance to go, and mounts one horse, rides it for a certain distance, and then switches to a new, fresh horse that is found at some waypoint, leaving the first horse behind. If we're talking about the Pony Express, it's easy to guess that there's no trouble at all in switching from one company horse to another. But if it's a private individual, it would seem like a horse switch would involve quite a bit of bargaining at the very least to establish the differing values of two horses.

(There's one question on this in the archives, from 5 years ago, with no authoritative answer.)

Im a bit confused by the question, even now you can travel using multiple horses. You simply ride a horse and a second one is tied with a rope to your saddle or you can hold the rope in your hand. As the first one gets tired you switch, granted thats not done often becasue there is rarely the need but jt is perfectly possible. What would make you think that horses are not fungible?

Edit: yes i realised im an idiot, no need to tell me.
